Oscar Wilde described a second marriage as 'the triumph of hope over experience.' I wouldn't know about that, settling as I have for just the one, but the sentiment is sound in principle.
Why then, one wonders, do we allow ourselves to become so over-heated about New Year's Eve when we have all too much experience to overwhelm any hope?
Susan Sontag wrote once, on the matter of people with slogan bearing tee-shirts - "If I don't want to talk to you, what makes you think I want to hear from your clothing?"
A fair point and one that ordinarily I would not dispute. So close your ears any who do not want to know that tonight my tee-shirt reads - "If You're Not Appalled, You've Not Been Paying Attention."
Happy New Year - I most earnestly hope.
