The Right Thing...

Wesley Autrey, a 50 year old New Yorker naval veteran and construction worker, saved the life of a young man who had fallen on to the tracks of the subway, by diving off the platform and rolling them both into the trough between the lines just as a train was passing. The young man, who had had some kind of seizure, then said to Wesley "Am I still alive?" to which the gallant veteran replied "Yes, but we won't be if you move!"

Mr Autrey shrugged off any suggestion of heroics by saying that he had only been doing 'the right thing.' Well, yes, right, but by golly and by God a heroic deed too.

Bravery is truly doing something risky when there is a choice not to do it at all. Thank you Wesley for being brave.

Wesley's two young daughters witnessed their father's bravery. That must have been terrifying for them to watch, but I trust they will grow to appreciate what a fine and holy thing their daddy did.

After the rescue Wesley continued on his journey to work. The family of the man he saved want to buy him 'a drink - no heck a hundred drinks.' Donald Trump wants to give him money. (Take the beer Wesley and leave Trump to his impossible hair weave!)

His mother commented "That's our upbringing. Helping people." Most helping is invisible - sometimes even to the person helped - so I rejoice that goodness has been made so inspirationally visible.

A good day.
